“Makes sense,” Liz smiles, holding up her newly tattooed arm.
“I wanted a bunny,” Jess screws up her nose, “but I guess this will do.”
“You don’t have a choice; this is our universal Force symbol,” Delia growls, “and also the symbol for female, which is fitting.”
“I was joking,” Jess rolls her eyes, and I snort, wincing as the medical officer wipes the blood from my arm, and rolls my sleeve back down. We are not in our battle suits while we wait to be forcefully repatriated back to the Star Biosphere. But that is something I plan to redress in about five minutes because there’s no way in hell I’m sitting around here while my sister is on death’s door on that planet.
As if she read my mind, a call comes in from my mother.
“Selena, make your way to your quarters for our call, please.”
I grimace at my team members. This means the communication is either off-the-record or a mother-daughter lecture, both types I abhor.
“Yes, Admiral.”
Entering my quarters, small and cramped on this vessel, I switch on the screen and sit back, waiting for her to speak.
“I’m surprised you are still there,” she says, smiling.
“You know me too well,” I scowl, “what do you know that you are not sharing, Mother. And don’t give me any crap about this human threat being news to you. Despite what Donna and Sandra just told me, I know for a fact the Earth men knew about us already, the guy we tortured told me. Those miners might, at a stretch, have never seen our kind before, but the commanders had at the very least heard rumours about us.”
I watch as she rolls her head around on her neck, stretching it, thinking.
“We lost a couple of jets about 18 months ago,” she says quietly. “The council felt it was time to reconnaissance the surface, to see if it might be viable to mine other minerals, and perhaps, a long shot I know, resettle a colony or two there, gain a foothold back on the planet. The jets and their crew, 12 men and 12 women, disappeared without a trace. We felt it prudent to sit on the information until we could determine the best course of action. Spies were sent down, but none returned with any concrete information, other than the fact that the surviving population in each of the major countries not affected by the nuclear wars operate under something called the Order For Life. Any spies we sent to infiltrate said Order, did not return. You have essentially confirmed everything we suspected.”
“What?” I frown, “you knew this, yet you still let my sister go down there to mine?”
“Our mining teams have continued to operate unmolested,” she shakes her head, closing her eyes for a minute, “if we had perceived the threat we would have sent more guards with them, arranged for better protection.”
“But you still would have sent them, sent them without the information they deserved to know; that these primitive men were no longer primitive.
